When you’re falling appart…

Bonjour guys ! Today I want to talk about cinéma, specifically about two films in which the actors whom play the main characters have received an Oscar for the leading role. That was for the Oscars 2015, I know, I am a year late haha ! But later better than never right ? I don’t write this article because they won prizes, but because I truly loved them. I am no cinéma critic, but the 7th art is one of my favorite, and with all those blockbusters only produced to make money, it’s good to watch real films.

  • Still Alice

« Still Alice » is an adaptation of the book of the same name written by Lisa Genova in 2009. I haven’t read the book, so I couldn’t tell if it’s a good adaptation, but I can affirm that it’s a beautiful film. It was directed by Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer in 2014. The cast is quite famous with Julianne Moore as the leading character Alice ( and Oscar winner ), Alec Baldwin as his husband, Kate Bosworth and Kristen Stewart as their daughters.

Still-Alice

She is a linguist and the ironie wants that she begins loosing her words. She has alzheimer, at an advance stage, her state can’t improve. The whole story is about trying to remember, or trying not to forget. She’s fighting, but in the end her mind is gone, and it’s the family who is struggling.

Many people have this disease, and not only the very old one. Alice is supposed to be around 50 years old, and yet she has alzheimer. There is this scene in the film in which she makes a speech about people suffering of the same trouble as hers. It’s such a beautiful speech, moving, deep, poetic, and above all optimistic.

This damn film made me cry, but not because it’s about being ill and die. It made me cry because it’s profoundly human, real, the cast is amazing and credible. Most important, it made me cry not because it’s sad, but because it’s beautiful. It’s not a question of a mind leaving a body, a mother leaving her children, a wife leaving her husband, nor a woman forgetting she’s even alive. I cried because no matter what they are going through, there is one thing no one has forgotten : love.

  • The Theory of Everything

I don’t know anything about physics, I never were into sciences, but not there are no excuses not to watch this movie. It was directed by James Marsh in 2014. Eddie Redmayne plays Stephen Hawkins, an actual physician, who suffers from a motor neuron disease that will put him in a chair. The film is the biography of this amazing man who is paralyzed, but contrary to Alice, is mind is perfectly fine. It’s his body which had letting him down.

Stephen Hawkins is famous for his black whole theory, and his sayings about the fact that a world with his theory implies the fact that there is no God. It’s is impossible. Though he found new elements, and he has admitted the probability of smoothing unexplainable that could be at the origin of the Universe, you can call it God if it pleases you.

Eddie Redmayne’s prestation is excellent, no surprise that he won an Oscar for this role. Yes costume and make up do a lot, but talent is here. The way he plays an unable person, his gesture, his voice… Incredible. Moreover, the script, the plot, the moral of it, everything is profoundly human and smart.

This is the real Stephen Hawkins, as you can tell by the pictures the resemblance is striking. But even is Stephen Hawkins were only a fictive character, the films wouldn’t be less touching. Lines are beautifully written, intelligent, and yes it’s about a handicapped man, but he’s a man above everything. A scientist, and just because he’s in a chair doesn’t mean he can’t think. He’s not dead. This film is about surviving, being different, about life, and many other things. This film is about everything, not just in theory.

If you have already seen those movies let me know what you think of them. And if you have any suggestions of films, don’t hesitate to tell me, I am always looking for films to discover. I wish you a good day or night, I talk to you very soon !

Bisous, Marion.
